The ACNC is an independent national body which manages and regulates Australian charities. They are responsible for registering organisations as charities and helping managers understand what their reporting requirements are. The ACNC’s existing systems didn’t fit their ‘digital first’ mandate, meaning they needed to be updated in a sustainable, appropriate and fit-for-purpose way to ensure the charity sector would be efficiently supported in the long term.
UPGRADING A SYSTEMS PROGRAM AND REDOING A WEBSITE SIMULTANEOUSLY
The ACNC’s existing business systems required updating via a Systems Upgrade Program. This new system would use Microsoft Dynamics with crucial information made available for more than 75,000 Australian charities. Key resources were also needed to help charities meet their obligations.
GovCMS was chosen as the preferred management platform. The website also needed to meet appropriate WCAG accessibility requirements. Icon was chosen to undertake this important project due to our extensive experience in GovCMS and accessibility, as well as the implementation of user-driven UX/UI design methodologies.
HELPING 75,000 CHARITIES FIND THE DATA THEY NEED
Icon was faced with a serious challenge in needing to connect GovCMS to Dynamics so as to be able to, in real-time, transfer publicly available information. With more than 75,000 charities taking part, all with associated reporting documents, we would receive more than 500,000 files that then needed to be split into 1.2 million content types, all stored within a Drupal database for efficient searching. The resulting website and associated database is quick, clear, efficient, looks great, and thanks to the use of dynamic chart rendering and tabbed charity pages, is super easy to use.
A WEBSITE BUILT FOR CONTENT AND SPEED
With so much content needing to be put onto the new site and system, Icon focused on developing the GovCMS system with a user-centric and contemporary design, before moving on to the Charity Register, so the ACNC content team could start filling out the site as soon as possible. The site’s content was written by numerous editors, so our team worked tirelessly to develop a consistent style that stuck to the rules and requirements set by the ACNC.
The final website is solidly developed and beautifully designed, allowing the ACNC to better support the Australian charities it works with and the important work they do.
